Agricultural research repositories
Agricultural research is scattered across hundreds of institutional archives. A handful of aggregators and discipline repositories cover most of what anyone actually needs.
Agricultural research does not sit in one place. It is produced by universities, national institutes, ministries, extension services and international organisations, and each of them archives its own output. The practical consequence is that the literature is genuinely open but genuinely scattered, and knowing the map is most of the skill.
Aggregators: start here
AGRIS, maintained by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, is the closest thing the field has to a single front door. It indexes millions of bibliographic records contributed by agricultural research institutions worldwide, and its coverage of national and regional research, in many languages, is far better than general search engines manage.
It is the right first stop for anything agricultural, and particularly for questions where the relevant work was probably done by a national institute in a country with similar conditions to yours rather than by a large university.
OpenAIRE aggregates the outputs of European publicly funded research across all disciplines, which makes it useful for finding project deliverables and funded reports that never became journal articles - a category that includes a great deal of applied agricultural work.
CORE and similar large-scale aggregators harvest open-access repositories broadly and are useful when you have a citation and need a readable copy.
Discipline repositories
Smaller, curated, and unusually high signal.
Organic Eprints covers organic and low-input farming systems and holds a large body of European work, including many project reports and conference contributions that exist nowhere else. Its subject scope is narrow and its depth within that scope is excellent.
AquaDocs serves aquatic sciences and fisheries, bringing together the output of marine and fisheries institutions internationally. For aquaculture questions it is a better starting point than any general search.
E-LIS covers library and information science, which sounds tangential until you are trying to understand how repositories and metadata standards work, at which point it becomes the primary literature.
Institutional repositories
Every research university and most national institutes run one, and this is where the legally readable version of a paywalled paper usually sits.
The mechanism is worth understanding, because it solves a problem people routinely give up on. Most publishers permit authors to deposit the accepted manuscript - the peer-reviewed text before the publisher’s typesetting - in their institution’s repository, sometimes after an embargo. So a paper behind a paywall on the publisher’s site is frequently available in full, legally, from the author’s university.
Finding it means searching the repository of the institution named in the author’s affiliation. It takes a couple of minutes and works more often than people expect.
Where the practical material hides
Much of the most directly useful agricultural information is not in journals at all. Extension services, agricultural departments and research institutes publish stocking guidance, irrigation scheduling recommendations, disease model parameters and equipment trial results as technical bulletins and reports.
This grey literature is often the answer to a practical question, and it is poorly indexed by general search engines while being well covered by AGRIS and by institutional repositories. It is the main reason to learn the specialist routes rather than defaulting to a general search.

What is the difference between an aggregator and a repository?
A repository holds and serves the documents themselves, usually for one institution or one discipline. An aggregator harvests metadata records from many repositories and offers a single search across them, then links out to the holding repository for the full text. AGRIS is an aggregator; a university archive is a repository. For a broad search start with an aggregator, then follow the link to whichever repository holds the item.
Why not just use a general academic search engine?
Use both. General academic search engines have enormous coverage and are the right first move for a known paper. Specialist agricultural aggregators index material the general engines cover poorly - national institute reports, extension publications, non-English regional research and grey literature - which is often precisely where practical agronomic and aquaculture data sits.
How does metadata harvesting work?
Through a long-established protocol for exposing metadata records, which repositories implement and aggregators periodically poll. It is why an aggregator can offer a unified search without holding any documents, and why a repository that implements the protocol correctly becomes discoverable everywhere at once.
